Adding Pluck On Demand to Your Site
How do I use Pluck On Demand with WordPress?
Note:
Blogs hosted at Wordpress.com (the free blog hosting service) do not support Pluck On DemandRichContent at this time, although Wordpress blogs hosted elsewhere work just fine.
To place the Pluck On DemandRichContent widget in your site sidebar:
- Log into your Wordpress administration area, and click through to Appearance > Widgets. (In earlier versions, it is Design > Widgets, or Presentation > Widgets). Click the Widgets link.
- Now you're on the Widgets page. Drag-and-drop the Text widget from the Available Widgets container into the right Sidebar.
- Finally, in the text box that pops open, leave the title blank, and paste the Pluck On DemandRichContent widget code into the text area below. Click 'Save' and then 'Close'

- Voila -- you have created your Pluck On DemandRichContent widget. Make sure you select a site theme that includes side bars, and you're all set!
Hint: Refresh your web browser if the Pluck On DemandRichContent widget does not immediately appear on your website.
How do I use Pluck On Demand with Blogger?
- In Blogger's dashboard, select 'Layout > Page Elements,' and then click 'Add a Gadget.'
- Pick 'HTML/JavaScript' as your gadget type to add.
- On the resulting box that pops up, leave the title blank, and paste the Related Content widget code to the text box. Save.

- Save your changes at the top right, and you should be good to go!

How do I use Pluck On Demand with Drupal?
Overview: You will create a Related Content widget in a Drupal 'block' that usually is placed in a sidebar on all your pages. This widget will display headlines related to whatever content is on your page.
- Log into your Drupal account (you will need privileges to create pages and blocks).
- Navigate to 'Administer > Site building > Blocks' from the main menu.
- Click 'Add Block' from the main content area to the right.
- Now it's time to give the new block some guts. Enter a 'Block Description' like Related Content Widget (this won't be visible). Do NOT give the block a title.
- Copy your widget's JavaScript code and paste it into the 'Block body'.
- Set the 'Input format' to 'Full HTML', and set Page specific visibility
settings to all pages. Select 'Save Block' at the bottom of the page.

- On the resulting Blocks page, find the block you just created in the list of disabled blocks, and select where you want to place it (often in the left/right sidebar).
- Click the 'Save blocks' button at the bottom and your widget is good
to go!

Hint: If you see the commented-out tags RELATED CONTENT START and END showing up, just remove them from your block -- this seems to be a Drupal bug.
How do I use Pluck On Demand with Joomla?
Early on we had trouble getting Joomla not to strip out Pluck On DemandRichContent widgets, but we have found an easy solution!
The problem was that Joomla's input form editor (called TinyMCE) automatically changes our code to make it unusable. The quick fix is to disable TinyMCE for your user account, add your Pluck On DemandRichContent widgets, then enable TinyMCE again so you can use it for all your regular posts again.
Here are the steps:
- In your Joomla administration menu, select Site > Control Panel.
- Click the User Manager button in your Control panel.

- From the User Manager screen, click on the name of your own account:

- From your User page, select 'Parameters > User Editor' in the upper-right box and select 'Editor - No Editor.'
- Save your changes above. That will turn off your automatic HTML editor
and allow you to set up the Pluck On DemandRichContent JavaScript.

- In your Joomla administration menu, at the top, select 'Extensions > Module Manager.'
- On your Module Manager page, you want to create a new module; so click
the 'New' button near the top-right.

- Click the 'Custom HTML' option.

- In the resulting Module page, name your new module by selecting 'Details > Title.' [Tip: Make sure that your module is turned on by looking at 'Details > Enabled.' It should be automatically turned on, but it can't hurt to check!]
- Select 'Details > Position' and drop down the menu to select where to display the new Pluck On DemandRichContent module. Some helpful positions for your new module include the left or right side bars.
- At the bottom of the page, paste your widget code into the 'Custom Output' box.
- Save your changes at the top-right, and you're pretty much done! Just
go back and re-enable the TinyMCE editor (we switched it off in Step 4).

How do I use Pluck On Demand with Ning?
- While logged into your Ning account, select
Manage > Features
- You will see a diagram of your site layout. Click "View all features" to expand the options.
- Once the feature list has expanded:
- drag one "Text Box" from the "Features" list into the left column of the "Layout" box
- drag another "Text Box" into the top of the wider middle column
You are now finished with this step. Click "Save" (or "Next" if you're setting up the page for the first time).
Now you will see your Ning site, and since you are logged in you also see "Edit" buttons next to the various text fields. Paste in our two main widgets and you'll be good to go. Here's how:

- In the left-hand sidebar text box, click
Edit - Copy our Related Content Widget code and paste it into that text box
Save- Next, click
Editin the central column text box (note that this one doesn't say "Text Box" at the top) - Copy our Landing Page Widget code and paste it into that text box
- One more important step -- in the Landing Page Widget code, change "true" to "false" in the line that reads
'showRelatedContent' : 'true',(change to'showRelatedContent' : 'false',) Save- Finally, be sure to set your Landing Page URL to your Ning homepage
How do I use Pluck On Demand with other publishing systems?
Pluck On DemandRichContent will work on any publishing system that allows the ability to place a chunk of JavaScript code in a sidebar area for the Related Content Widget (or this can be beneath all of your own articles if you have access to the template where your main posts appear).
If you'd like us to take a look at a publishing system that we have not mentioned, please write us through the Contact Us form.

How do I block an article or a video that I don't like?
If you see an article or a video in your Pluck On DemandRichContent widgets that you don't like, you can "block" it so that it will never appear again. Here's how:
First, log into your Pluck On DemandRichContent account. You can do this through your own Landing Page widget.
Logging into your Pluck On DemandRichContent account through a Landing Page widget
- View the URL where your Landing Page Widget lives.
- If you don't know the URL, here's how to find it:
- View a full Pluck On DemandRichContent article or video
- In the address bar at the top of your browser, remove everything in the URL (the Web address) including and to the right of
?PLUCKarticleId (or &PLUCKarticleId). This will get you just the
page itself.
Example
On my site, I find my Landing Page Widget URL by clicking a full article and copying the highlighted part of the URL:
http://austinicity.com/article.html?PLUCKarticleId=7e8053ed-7fdb-c2c8-dfb7-27575798539f&PLUCKtitle=Ricksha_...&PLUCKmediaType=Text&PLUCKauthor=Trivial%20Matters&PLUCKwhichPage=articlePage
- Then add
?PLUCKwhichPage=loginSignupto the end of the URL and hit Return.Example
From my example above, the login form URL would look like:
http://austinicity.com/article.html?PLUCKwhichPage=loginSignup
This will load the Full Page Content widget as a login form that looks like this:
Log in using your Pluck On DemandRichContent account username and password.
Once you're logged in, view the full article or video you want to block. Click the "Block Article" button underneath and it will go away forever.
I put a widget on my page, but nothing appears – how do I troubleshoot this?
These are the main reasons a widget would not appear after you placed it on your site:
- Widgets will only work on domains that have been enabled for your account (your domain is the "yoursite.com" part of your website address). Look in your Account Settings and make sure your site URL is in the Account Domains list.
- If you put a widget on a totally blank page, it won't show any related articles or videos because it has nothing to match our content to. Try adding a paragraph of text to the page.
- If you are using a publishing system of some kind, our widgets have to be entered in "HTMLS" or "code" mode. Some systems change our code if it thinks you're adding them as a regular website post or page.
Enter Pluck On DemandRichContent widgets as "code" or "HTML"
You can check whether this is the problem by viewing the "page source" and seeing if the widget was saved into your page correctly. You'll have to look through some HTML code, but don't be afraid!
Here's how: in your Web browser, go to the page where your widget isn't properly showing up and from the top browser menu select
View > SourceorView > Page Source. You'll see a page full of code. Find the Pluck On DemandRichContent widget code you used on that page (shortcut: search the text for the word "widget" to jump right to it).Compare the code to the original code you copied from us -- do they look identical? If the code on your browser has a lot of other tags in it like
<br>, <p>, or a lot of junky characters that look like& lt<br>, then it didn't work.
Where on my site should I place Pluck On Demand widgets?
Primary Widgets
Related Content Widget
This widget displays links of related articles and videos, and is typically placed in a sidebar visible across your entire site. It can also be useful beneath all of your site's own articles (this is usually accomplished by placing it in your site's own template underneath where it displays your full posts).
Landing Page Widget
This widget will display any full PluckRichContent articles, videos, or other information linked to from a PluckRichContent link. Therefore, this widget only needs to exist in a single location, and should be placed in the main body section of a page.
Sample placement for Related Content and Landing Page Widgets
Note:
If you are using a publishing system like Wordpress, it is a good idea to put the Landing Page Widget in a single post that you back-date a year or so in order to hide it from your home page's listing of most recent posts.
Secondary Widgets
Related Tags Widget
The Related Tags Widget is used exactly like the Related Content Widget above.
Popular Content, Active Users, Latest Comments
These are what we call "discovery" widgets -- they let your viewers discover the latest comments and Pluck On DemandRichContent users. These typically go in a sidebar on your site.
Comments and Recommendations
If you want to use Comments and Recommendations (a thumbs-up / thumbs-down user rating system) on Pluck On DemandRichContent articles, you turn those on through our Landing Page Widget.
If you'd like to use our Comments or Recommendations on your own content (that is, let people comment on or rate your own posts using our widgets), you should place our Comments and/or Recommendations widgets in your own site template underneath where your own posts are displayed.
I've changed the content on the page where the Pluck On Demand widget sits – why don't related articles change?
If you change your content, it can take our system up to 24 hours to "crawl" or re-examine your site in order to match new articles in a Related Content Widget.
My widgets aren't linking to each other correctly. How can I fix this?
There are two basic Pluck On DemandRichContent widgets:
- A Related Content Widget, which shows links related articles and videos
- and a Landing Page Widget, which displays any full articles or videos clicked on from the Related Content Widget, as well as Topic Pages
Here's how to get the two widgets to link together correctly. You may have already completed some of these steps:
- First, the Related Content Widget usually goes in a sidebar across your site, or sometimes beneath your own articles. This widget should work right out of the box
- Next, the Landing Page Widget should go in the main body section of a page. If you're using any kind of publishing system, this widget is usually saved in the body of a regular post (often back-dated a year or so in order not to show up in your home page's "most recent posts")
- Finally, our system needs to know the webpage address of the Landing Page Widget in order to know where to take you when you click on a link to a related article or video. You accomplish this by entering the URL (the webpage address) of your Landing Page Widget on the Account Settings page
Advanced FAQs
Layout and CSS
How do I change what appears in my widgets: thumbnail images, article summaries, etc.
Many of the basic widget design changes you can make are set in the widget code itself. You simply edit the text inside the widget code, such as the highlighted sections of the code below (this is a Related Content Widget).
<!-- RELATED CONTENT WIDGET START -->
<script type="text/javascript">
var PLUCKIT_APIKEY = "00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000";

General Stylesheet Information
General Stylesheet Information
Pluck On DemandRichContent's widgets are designed to inherit as much of your own site's look and feel as possible, but since every site is different your results may vary.
You can change the look of any part of our widgets by using Cascading Stylesheets or CSS. Almost all sites on the Web today have a separate stylesheet that sets all the fonts, colors, and design elements for the site. To alter our widget design, you can simply add our CSS styles into your own stylesheet and then change the CSS settings.
Note
If you don't want to edit your stylesheet (or you don't know how), you can also put styles in tags right above your widget code in your HTML page like so:
<style type="text/css">
YOUR-CSS-STYLES-GO-HERE
</style>
WIDGET CODE GOES HERE
Here's an example:
Reference
For a good general CSS reference, visit W3Schools.com's CSS Reference. If you need an overview of what CSS is and how it works, check out Webmonkey's Stylesheets Guide.
Note
Please also note that these basic design options are set through the widget code itself. See the widget options reference for more information on each widget's options.
How do I hide or change the design of the "More On This Topic" header?
If you want to alter the size or design of the "More On This Topic" headline, add this to your own stylesheet:
.podHeadlineWidget .podPageTitle {
font-family: FONT-FAMILY-HERE;
font-size: FONT-SIZE-HERE;
}

Customizing Pluck On Demand
How do I improve content matches?
The first step in improving content matches is deciding which approach to take.
Visit the Pluck On Demand Preview Content page in order to play with the three different methods of returning related content:
- pointing a widget at a separate webpage
- loading a widget with one or more keywords
- loading a widget with a block of text
You can set a Related Content Widget to return content any of those three ways.
Once you have decided which method works best, read on to learn how to set your widget for that kind of matching.
How do I improve content matches? 1) designate parts of a page to scan
If you're not happy with your content matches, we highly recommend designating parts of your page to have our widget scan.
You can point our widget at the most important parts of your page to get the best related headlines back. Surround important sections of your page with these tags in your site's own HTML on pages where Pluck On DemandRichContent widgets live:
<!-- PluckIt ContentStart --> and <!-- PluckIt ContentEnd -->
You can use these tags as many times as you like on a page (in case you want your widget to scan one part of your page over here, and another part of your page over there).
(You don't have to worry about this when using the Full Page Content widget as it does this automatically.)
How do I improve content matches? 2) place widgets for the best results
Pluck On DemandRichContent widgets work best with larger bodies of content from which to draw related results. Try to make sure that related content widgets are placed on pages that have a substantial amount of content to crawl.
You can use Pluck On DemandRichContent on pages with less content by pointing the widgets at keywords or other pages for contextualization. See the FAQs for instructions.
Placing the Related Content Widget
The Related Content Widget typically sits in a sidebar that shows up across your entire site, or beneath all of your own articles.
How do I improve content matches? 3) Point a widget at another webpage
You can point a Related Content Widget, or the Related Content part of a Landing Page Widget, at a separate webpage to scan in order to return matching articles and videos.
In order to point a widget at another page to scan, place the code below inside the widget itself:
'url' : 'URL-OF-THE-PAGE-TO-SCAN-HERE',
Remember that the very last attribute in any widget should NOT have a comma at the end.
Example
One reason you might point a widget at another page to scan is if you have a "print version" that displays entire articles while your widget sits on a page that paginates articles (or only shows a portion). You could point the widget at the print version in order to scan the entire article body.
Previewing Content
Visit the Pluck On Demand Preview Content page in order to play with the three different methods of returning related content:
- pointing a widget at a separate webpage
- loading a widget with one or more keywords

You can set a Related Content Widget to return content any of those three ways.
How do I improve content matches? 4) Contextualize using keywords or blocks of text
You can load a Related Content Widget, or the Related Content part of a Landing Page Widget, with keywords or a block of text in order to return the matches that you want.
To use a single keyword or a few keywords, add this code below inside the widget itself:
'tag' : 'apple, pear, raspberry soda',
To load a widget with a block of text, add the code below:
'textKeywords' : 'PUT-YOUR-BLOCK-OF-TEXT-HERE',
Remember that the very last attribute in any widget should NOT have a comma at the end.

Overview of the Landing Page Widget
The Landing Page Widget is a smart widget that can do a lot of things, including showing full articles and videos; displaying topic pages; and even serving as a login form for you to log into your account in order to block articles.
Article or Video View
The most common use of the Landing Page Widget is to display full articles and videos that users click from the Pluck On DemandRichContent Related Content widgets.
Setting the Landing Page Widget URL
You have to set your site's Landing Page Widget URL in your account settings so that Related Content Widgets know where to link in order to display full articles and videos.
The Landing Page Widget displaying a full article
Topic Page View
Landing Page Widgets are also used to show Topic Pages related to a given keyword. The keywords can come from either a standalone Related Tags widget, or be displayed as related tag links with a full article or video.

Social Media Widget Options
Comments Widget options
If you want comments and a comment form to be displayed with Pluck On Demand articles, simply enable that setting in the Landing Page Widget options to: 'showComments' : 'true',
You can also use our standalone Comments Widget to allow visitors to comment on your own articles. Here's how:
Paste the Comment widget where it will be displayed with all of your articles (such as on your own article template underneath where articles are displayed), and it will tie a given comment thread to the URL that the article appears on, so it should work right off the bat.
Sometimes this doesn't work because of how some sites' URLs are generated. If this is the case, you can program the widget to tie the comments to the right articles (warning: this requires some knowledge of programming).
To program the widget, place a comment widget on your page template and set the "publisherContentId" option equal to a unique value for your articles, such at their permalink. Here is an example:
<!-- COMMENT WIDGET START -->
<script type="text/javascript">
var PLUCKIT_APIKEY = '00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000';
var PLUCKIT_WIDGET_OPTIONS = {
'showAvatar' : 'true',
'showProfile' : 'true',
'publisherContentId' : 'YOUR PROGRAMMING LOGIC HERE TO PROVIDE A VALUE UNIQUE TO A GIVEN ARTICLE, SUCH AS ITS PERMALINK'
}
</script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://pluckit.demandmedia.com/Widgets/v1/PluckItCommentWidget/generated.js?apiKey=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000"></script>

<!-- COMMENT WIDGET START -->
<script type="text/javascript">
var PLUCKIT_APIKEY = '00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000';
var PLUCKIT_WIDGET_OPTIONS = {
'showAvatar' : 'true',
'showProfile' : 'true',
'publisherContentId' : 'YOUR PROGRAMMING LOGIC HERE TO PROVIDE A VALUE UNIQUE TO A GIVEN ARTICLE, SUCH AS ITS PERMALINK'
}
</script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://pluckit.demandmedia.com/Widgets/v1/PluckItCommentWidget/generated.js?apiKey=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000"></script>
<!-- COMMENT WIDGET END -->
Note
If you use our standalone comments widget with your own site's content, you also have the ability to delete any comments you find objectionable.
Ads
How do I block certain ads from appearing on the widget?
Pluck On Demand filters out advertisements that we deem inappropriate. If you find an advertisement you do not want shown on your site please take a screenshot of the ad (or write a description of the ad, including the text and a description of any images) and record the URL. Please sent that information to us at ondemandsupport@pluck.com and if it is inappropriate for our network, we will arrange to have the ad permanently removed.
Can I display my own ads alongside Pluck On Demand ads?
We ask that you only use Pluck On Demand ads on your Full Page Content (full page articles, videos, and tag result pages).
Payment
How will I earn money using Pluck On Demand?
You will be paid a percentage of advertising revenue displayed on your site. Results will vary by ad type we show with the content, but generally we split the net revenue between the Publisher, the creator of the content and Pluck. The more traffic the Pluck On Demand pages generate on your site, the higher your earnings will be.
When will I get paid?
Per our terms of use, publishers will be paid via PayPal 30 days after the close of the month in which they reach $10 in accrued earnings.
How do I see how much I've earned?
To see how much you have earned through Pluck On Demand, visit the Account > Reports page on the Pluck On Demand website. You will be able to see widget traffic and revenue reports by month.
Payment on Reports Page is Approximate
Please note that the reports that you see may be an estimation of how much you have accrued. Exact payment amounts are calculated at the time payment occurs.
